Taizhou has atotal area of 5,787 square meters and a population of 5.07 million. Itadministrates four counties, namely Jingjiang, Taixing, Jiangyan and Xinghua,two districts, namely Hailing and Gaogang, and the Taizhou Medical Hi-techZone. In 2012, it had the local production value of RMB 242.2 billion and thefinancial income exceeded RMB 62.3 billion.

 

Taizhouis a culturally famous city with a long history. Taizhou has a 2100-year oldconstruction history integrating the style of Yangtze River and Huai River. Forthousands of years, Taizhou has been in good weather, safe and comfortable andwas named auspicious land. So many celebrities gathered here, such as ShiNaian, Zheng Banqiao and Mei Lanfang. There are several famous scenic spotssuch as Guangxiao Temple, Chongru Temple, Anding Academy, Sea-watching pavilionand so on. In addition, Gingko Forests, Qinhu Wetland, Waterfront Forests andTiande Lake Park are also attractive.

Location

 

Taizhouis located at the center of Jiangsu. It reaches of the Yangtze River withNantong to the south, Yangzhou to the west and Zhenjiang, Changzhou and Wuxi onthe opposite side of the Yangtze River.

Taizhouhas an individual hill which is one of northeast extensions of Tianmu Mountainin Zhejiang. It is located in Gushan Town about 5 to 6 kilometers away to thenorth of Jingjiang. Its latitude is 55.6 meters, the circumference is 1.5kilometers and the covering area is 50 thousand square meters. It is the uniquemountain in North Jiangsu flatlands, so it is named Gu (which means lonely inChinese) Mountain.

Taizhouis covered with several rivers and located in the North Subtropical HumidClimate. It is affected by the monsoon circulation and has a distinctivemonsoon climate.

Climate

 

Taizhouis located in the northern subtropical zone. Affected by monsoon windcircumfluence, it has a humid climate with distinct monsoon features. Seasonshere are distinct: hot and rainy in the summer while temperate and dry in thewinter. It has a long period of frost free days throughout the year. There isplenty of heat and rain; in addition, both the heat and rain come at the sametime.

Withfour seasons, it is hot and rainy in summer, warm and less rains in winter. Ithas a long term of frost-free period, abundant heat, sufficient rainfalls andthe same period of rains and heat.

Thehighest temperature in Taizhou is in July and the lowest temperature is inJanuary. The average annual temperature is between 14.4 and15.1 andthe average rainfall amount is 1,037.7 mm.

InTaizhou, spring comes at the end of March to the beginning of April. Summercomes at the first twenty days of June. Autumn comes in the mid of Septemberand

Itwas comfortable in autumn and freezing cold in winter. More sunny days and weakwinds are beneficial to the growing and harvest of agricultural plants.

Economy

 

Taizhouplays an important role in strategic position. Since ancient time, Taizhou hasbeen the door connecting the rivers and seas and has played an importantfunction in the local economic and cultural development. Taizhou is in theconnection of areas along the sea and the Yangtze River T-type industrial belt.It has good regional advantages, resource conditions and economic bases.

Sincethe foundation of New China, especially the reform and opening-up policy,Taizhou's society and economy developed well. Taizhou became an industrial andcommercial city based on industry.

Asone of 14 central cities in the Yangtze River Delta, Taizhou is a new start ofadvanced development, scientific development and harmonious development.Taizhou has a strong industrial economic base and owns 34 thousand industrialenterprises of all kinds, among which 1,083 above-scale enterprises, thusforming pillar industries of mechanical electricity, chemical engineering,textile, food, light industry, medicine and building materials. The productionscale and market occupation rate of approximately 100 products are listed inthe forefront around the nation, among which sales of 56 products are listed intop 3 and 17 products have been "single champions". It has severallarge enterprises, such as Chunlan Group, Yangtze River Pharmaceutical Groupand Xingda Steel Cord.

 

Culture & History

 

Taizhou is agreat city of culture and has over 2,100 years of history. In ancient times, itwas called Haiyang or Hailing. In the early period of the Han Dynasty, Taizhouwas established as a county; in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, it became aprefecture, and then in the Southern Tang Dynasty, it was a state, whose namemeans "the country is prosperous and the people live in peace".

OnJanuary 21 of the 38th Year of the Republic of China (1949), the Taizhou citywas liberated. On the next day, the urban area was named Taizhou City and therural area was named Tai County. On April 24, the North Jiangsu AdministrativeGovernment Office was found and the administrative office was set in Taizhou,which administered 5 administrative areas, including Taizhou, Yangzhou,Yancheng, Huaiying and Nantong, and 4 counties (cities). On May 1, the originalfirst administrative district in Central China was named North Jiangsu TaizhouAdministrative Region. The Taizhou Administrative Region administered TaizhouCity, Taixing County, Jingjiang County, Tai County, Hai'an County, GugaoCounty, Dongtai County and Taibei County. In January, 1950, TaizhouAdministrative Region and Yangzhou Administrative Region were merged intoTaizhou Administrative Region and the local department was in Taizhou, which administeredTaizhou City, Yangzhou City, Tai County, Taixing County, Jingjiang County,Jiangdu County, Xinghua County, Gaoyou County, Baoying County, Yizheng Countyand Luhe County. Later, Yangzhou City was directly subordinated to NorthJiangsu Administrative Region. In February, North Jiangsu Taizhou SpecialOffice was named Jiangsu Yangzhou Administrative Government Office. During theperiod from May to October 1950 and from January to May 1959, Taizhou City andTai County were merged for several times. In August 1996, Taizhou was promotedfrom a county level to a municipal level. The municipal Taizhou was establishedand had Hailing District, Taixing, Jiangyan, Jingjiang and Xinghua. GaogangDistrict was set up in April 1997.

Alladministrative regions in Taizhou have a long history. Hailing was establishedin Han Dynasty. Taixing and Xinghua were established in the Five Dynasties.Jingjiang was established in Ming Dynasty.

Taizhouhas many famous food, such as noodle, globe fish, dried tofu, etc. Noodle withfish soup is a popular snack among local residents of Taizhou. The noodles areregarded as the symbol of longevity. Therefore, it is a typical food forbirthday celebrations.

Themurky white broth is the key element of the dish, made from eel, fish and pork.Once the broth is ready, boiled noodles and green onion are added. If you wantto eat like the locals, you should first give it a stir and sip the soup.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Areyou brave enough to eat Globe fish? Although globe fish is a poisonous animal,skillful and experienced Taizhou chefs can prepare a premium dish with it.

 

Accordingto the legend, the dish is very tempting, attracting attention through itsscent. It is said that one day a local fishermen prepared the dish for himself,but by the time he finished cooking, the entire village had appeared at hisdoor, following the wonderful aroma.

 

 

 

There are two different ways to preparethe shreds of dried tofu, either boiled or simmered. The flavour of the dish isvaried and includes slices of ham, bamboo shoots, mushrooms, silver fish,chicken pieces, egg, and seaweed. Though the blend is quite diverse, theflavour is delicious.

 

Soysauce and sesame oil can be used as condiments, complementing the overall tasteof the dish.

 

 

 

Thisquick snack is probably the most exquisite and oldest snack of Taizhou.Considering its age and taste, some may argue that Taizhou is the home of pizzadough.

 

Huangqiaobaked sesame seed coated cakes are divided into two major categories, ordinaryand sophisticated. The ordinary include crispy cakes, square cakes, sesame-seedcoated cakes and triangular shaped cakes. The cakes considered sophisticatedare the ones containing fillings. Leaf lard and fried pork flakes, leaf lardand sugar, sweet osmanthus, longhidou, crab spawn, shrimp meat, and jujubepaste are the typical fillings.

 

Jingjiangsteamed dumplings are juicy buns filled with crab meat and gravy. Thisdelicious offering is among one of China’s six most famous snacks, dating backover

200years. 

 

The bun is known for itsextremely thin dough and juicy filling. Though it adds to its taste, there isalso an element of danger as well if handled too roughly. Be careful not toburn yourself or make a mess while eating it. To eat it properly, you should dowhat local wisdom advises: “pick it up tenderly; move fast; a small bite atfirst; then drink the soup.”
